In 1998 The Road Home began operating the Community Winter Shelter for men in a former celery warehouse in Midvale. In 2010 they transitioned the facility to serve families with children. In 2012 they renovated the building with partners, and in 2015 they opened the new two-story facility. This emergency shelter includes office and communal spaces, dining and cooking facilities, a dorm-style sleeping area, and access for people with disabilities. The Midvale Family Resource Center serves up to 300 people nightly, with on-site case management and on and off-site community partners.

HomeAid Utah was called in to revamp their outdoor space, including the installation of artificial turf. The grass in the children’s play area was destroyed by FEMA tents placed outside the shelter during the pandemic to maintain COVID protocols. This area is the ONLY outdoor play area for kids staying at the shelter. With help from Utah West Landscape, Hymas Landscape, Rocky Mountain Turf, Twin Pines Nursery, Sun State Equipment, Richins General Engineering, JB Waterworks, Woodside Homes, and Kristin Andrus we were able to transform into a place where children can play, exercise their imagination, and grow!

When the adhesive was finally set, the kids living in the shelter ran outside without shoes or coats to play on the new turf despite the 20-degree weather. One little girl said, “I can’t believe they built this for us!”

The new turf will be a place for respite for years to come.
