More Beds, More Hope: HomeAid Utah Helps VOA's Youth Resource Center Expand Capacity for Youth Experiencing Homelessness

Every night in Salt Lake County, young people are searching for a safe place to sleep. For years, VOA Utah's Youth Resource Center has been that place for many of them, offering 37 year-round emergency shelter beds to youth who have nowhere else to turn. But the need has kept growing, and 37 beds has fallen far short of the demand.

That's why HomeAid Utah stepped in to help VOA Utah do something about it.

The Challenge

With conditional use approval from the Salt Lake City Planning Commission and City Council, VOA Utah had the green light to grow. The obstacle wasn't willpower, it was space. To add beds, an existing upstairs room needed to be transformed into a fire-rated dormitory that met state licensing and safety standards. That meant real construction: new fire protection, new flooring, thoughtful design, and the kind of skilled trade work that turns a vision into a livable, safe space.

This is exactly the gap HomeAid Utah exists to fill, connecting the homebuilding industry's expertise, materials, and generosity with the nonprofits doing the frontline work of ending homelessness.

The Renovation

HomeAid Utah rallied a team of community and trade partners to bring the project to life:

• Builders FirstSource

• Bart Mensinger

• Majestic Flooring

• Firetrol Protection Systems

• Knighton Architecture

• EverOn

Together, this group turned an underused upstairs room into a fully renovated, fire-rated dormitory space, adding 10 more beds and bringing the Youth Resource Center's capacity to 47. That's 10 more young people who now have a warm bed, a safe roof, and a starting point toward stability, every single night.

The numbers tell part of the story: the total project value came to $34,372, with HomeAid Utah and its partners contributing largely in in-kind donations. Altogether, this partnership saved VOA Utah more than $20,000, dollars that can now go directly toward the programs and people at the heart of their mission, rather than construction costs.

Celebrating the Finished Space

On July 22, HomeAid Utah and key project contributors returned to the Youth Resource Center, not with tools this time, but with breakfast. The team served a celebratory breakfast for youth residents to mark the completion of the renovation and to say thank you to everyone who made it possible.

Moments like these are why HomeAid Utah does this work. It's not just about square footage or building materials. It's about the young people who will walk into that newly finished room and, for the first time in a while, feel like they have a place to land.

Why It Matters

Every bed added at the Youth Resource Center represents a young person who won't spend tonight outside. This project is a powerful example of what's possible when the building industry shows up for the community, turning expertise and generosity into real capacity for organizations like VOA Utah.
