HomeAid Utah and Utah Advocacy Coalition Host Screening of UnCharitable and Panel on Rethinking Philanthropy

Sandy, UT — Friday, September 26th — HomeAid Utah and the Utah Advocacy Coalition are proud to announce a special screening of UnCharitable, the groundbreaking documentary directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal. The event took place on Friday, September 26 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Megaplex Theatres at Jordan Commons, followed by an engaging panel discussion with national and local leaders.

UnCharitable challenges outdated ideas about philanthropy and nonprofit work, exposing the harmful belief that organizations must “do more with less.” The film makes a bold case for eliminating restrictive overhead limits and outdated funding models that hold back real, lasting impact.

Following the screening, attendees heard from a distinguished panel that included:

  • Stephen Gyllenhaal, Director of UnCharitable

  • Kathy Bray, President and CEO of VOA Utah

  • Wayne Niederhauser, Utah State Homelessness Coordinator

  • Melissa Hart, Associate Producer of UnCharitable

  • Moderated by Melanie Jones, nonprofit strategist and community leader

This discussion dove into critical questions facing the sector, including the “overhead myth,” scaling versus sustainability, risk and failure, and how public perception shapes nonprofit outcomes. The panel also explored how upstream investments in areas such as education, mental health, affordable housing, and disability support can reduce long-term costs and prevent crises like homelessness before they begin.

This event was generously sponsored by Larry H. Miller Real Estate.
