Awareness

Homelessness in America

HomeAid has a responsibility to bring awareness to the community about the issues we face concerning homelessness and to break down the stereotypes of who experiences homelessness.

Homelessness affects everyone and can happen to anyone.

Did you know?

  • Over 3,000 people experience homelessness on any given night in Utah
  • Over 3.5 million Americans will experience homelessness this year; over 1 million will be children
  • The top three reasons for becoming homeless are the high cost of housing/lack of affordable housing, job loss  and break-up of family
  • Salt Lake City was ranked at the 20th least affordable metro area in the nation for housing costs
  • Renters must earn at least $17.02 – more than 2.5x minimum wage – to afford a typical 2-BR apartment in Utah
  • 45% of renters are considered cost-burdened, spending more than 30% of their incomes on rent
  • 19% of renters are considered severely cost-burdened, spending more than 50% of their income on housing
  • 50% of homelessness among women is caused by domestic violence
