The highlights of the project are a new spa bathroom, a laundry room, and a refillable water station.  The new bathroom that is fully ADA compliant and features a large shower stall and a walk-in bathtub.  The new laundry room has two brand new washers and dryers and a hand sink.  The water refill station has a bottle filler and drinking fountain to provide cold filtered water to the residents, staff and volunteers.  Other health and life-safety repairs included a new grease trap in the kitchen, a new hot water heater, recirculating pump and gauges, and new electrical panels throughout the facility.

HomeAid Utah and All Phase Remodeling managed the project, which carried a total value of $84,000.  According to Don, “This was one of our first projects in Utah, and we were drawn to The INN Between’s mission of caring for people who have nowhere else to live at the end of life.  We were able to procure donations and discounts of $24,000 from our supplier and trade networks in addition to $30,000 cash donations. The final cost to The INN Between was only $30,000, saving them 60%!”

According to The INN Between CEO, Kimberlin Correa, “We endured two years with one of our two common shower rooms out of commission. A mold abatement project led to the discovery of the metal studs being eroded to the point that only the drywall was holding up the walls. The common bathrooms are used when our clients want a bath or when they need a CNA to assist with showering or bathing. We couldn’t afford the costly repairs, so the room sat locked until HomeAid Utah came to the rescue.  We put our heads together and realized that we could convert that large but poorly utilized space into two spaces, keeping the spa bathroom and adding a client laundry room, something our facility lacked.”

Program Director Matilda Lindgren said, “Self-reliance and personal responsibility are core values of our program.  In our old home in the convent on Goshen Street, clients were expected to do their own laundry as long as their health permitted, and they took pride in their personal responsibilities.  We are thrilled that our clients, who are fit, can once again take care of their own belongings.”

According to Andrea Washburn, Facility Manager, “The needed life-safety upgrades were identified as other project work was being completed, and we are grateful that Don was able to incorporate them into his project. It saved us a lot of time and anguish, and of course money, while ensuring the safety of our residents, staff, and volunteers.”

HomeAid Utah is committed to working with non-profit providers of services for our friends experiencing homelessness. Their unique position as a charitable associate of the Salt Lake Home Builders Association gives them the opportunity to bridge the homebuilding industry to worthy projects in a way that saves providers significantly on their rehab and construction projects. This gives the homebuilding industry a targeted way to give back and the service providers save their valuable operating capital for direct client services.
